History, Renewed
The Historic Five-Five-Five Building in Downtown St. Louis
Erected 1875
555 Washington was originally multiple distinct buildings. Crawford’s Dry Goods was a general store, Mary Finney’s elegant curtain cast iron Victorian sold hats, furs and parasols, and beside the Union Market was a saddlery and wagon outfitter. In 1904, David May purchased and combined the buildings, filling in the alley and creating an open, light-filled interior.
Also known as the Famous Clothing Store, the May Company headquarters was the largest retailer in the United States in the early 1900s. In 1913 the May Company moved to the nearby Railway Exchange Building. Years passed and in 1985 555 Washington avoided demolition and was instead renovated into offices with retail and restaurant on the ground floor.
