Erected 1875

555 Washington was originally multiple distinct buildings. Crawford’s Dry Goods was a general store, Mary Finney’s elegant curtain cast iron Victorian sold hats, furs and parasols, and beside the Union Market was a saddlery and wagon outfitter. In 1904, David May purchased and combined the buildings, filling in the alley and creating an open, light-filled interior.

Also known as the Famous Clothing Store, the May Company headquarters was the largest retailer in the United States in the early 1900s. In 1913 the May Company moved to the nearby Railway Exchange Building. Years passed and in 1985 555 Washington avoided demolition and was instead renovated into offices with retail and restaurant on the ground floor.

1875: Construction commences on 6th and Washington
1876: Mary Finney’s building permit issued
1898: Crawford’s combines buildings, creates glass-domed entry
1904: May Co. combines more buildings, fills in alley
1985: Building avoids demolition; instead is renovated
2002: Greater Missouri Builders purchases building from USPS

Multiple styles combined into one building, from Finney’s elegant Victorian with a curtain wall cast iron front, to the Italianate Bradford-Martin Building with a glass-domed entry, to the old growth industrial Meyer-Bannerman building. By combining the three buildings and filling in the alley, “famous” entrepreneur May created an open, light-filled interior still evident today.

Architecture

Restaurant space was originally a horse and wagon saddlery, with high ceilings and big windows; old Finney building is an elegant gallery and auction house with historical facade, crowning pediment and eagle; light filled interior marble lined atrium lobby originally created by David May.

Ground Floor

The entire 555 Building features expansive windows, floor-to-ceiling in many spaces, and a window-lined roof for a healthy dose of natural light and beautiful sky views at any time of day. The light in each space fantastically captures the historic charm and elegant updates.
